Identifying garden plants

Identifying and describing the functions of different parts of flowering plants: roots, stem/trunk, leaves and flowers.

Identifying different materials

Blossom class used their enquiry skills to find out more about various materials. The children had loads of fun carrying out various investigations to find out how the materials were effected by jumping on them, pouring water on them, twisting them, snapping them etc.

 

Using that they found out they were then able to sort them into groups based on their similarities. 

 

The children then used these enquiry skills to try to answer the question, What would make the best material for a house and why?

 

Our Key Stage 1 children have been exploring the school grounds throughout the year to explore and answer questions about animals that may live there including foxes, birds and squirrels which have been spotted and look for evidence of their habitats.

 

Through a recent school visit children were able to have a hand on opportunity with various animals where they were able to become familiar with the common names of some fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, including those that are kept as pets. They then used this visit to find more information about these animals.

Classifying materials by their properties

Key Stage 1 children have been classifying and sorting materials by finding out how they change when wet. They decided that the materials that changed when water was put onto them were not waterproof and the materials that didn't change were waterproof.
