Reading 2018-2019

At the end of every day, the teacher or teaching assistant reads a novel or story to their class for 20 minutes, which is always an enjoyable end to the school day. Check out the novels page for a list of the current or favourite novels, which are being read to all the classes.

To start the summer term off, the whole of Upper Key Stage 2 are basing their Adventure around Harry Potter. The children are all really excited about this and have now been sorted into their houses. They will be looking very closely at the books throughout the half term.

Roald Dahl Day

Roald Dahl Day took place on the 13th September (his birthday). The children all dressed up as their favourite Roald Dahl character and completed a variety of different activities throughout the day. We started the day with an assembly, where we learnt more about who Roald Dahl was and completed a quiz about him. The children then went off to their classrooms, where they completed some exciting work on a specific Roald Dahl book.

As a whole school reward for attendance, the children were awarded a bedtime story afternoon.

Teachers and staff wore pyjamas and the children listened to every teacher in the school read them a story.

The children spent 10 minutes in every classroom and were read 11 different stories altogether.

The children and staff enjoyed the afternoon and it really demonstrated Westwood’s love for Reading.

Reading Club

In Year 6, some of the children have been fortunate enough to attend a Reading Club club on a Tuesday morning. This has given the children a great opportunity to show off their reading skills during their final year at Westwood. The children have been looking at a variety of different reading skills, as well as completing a variety of different comprehension tasks.
