Each week you're going to have some different tasks to do. Every day there will be a maths problem to solve too.

Day 1: Word problems

Days 2, 3 and 4: Maths skills

Day 5: A combination of skills

## Day 1

Today I'd like you to have a go at these word problems.

bonjour !
There are 25 pupils in Form 5 at Sun Valley School. Each pupil learns either one or two languages, chosen from French and German. At present there are 15 pupils learning French and 12 pupils learning German. How many pupils learn both languages?

bank holidays
At the bank where John works there are 20 employees altogether. Last year 8 of them had holidays in the UK and 13 had holidays abroad; 4 of them had both UK and foreign holidays. How many employees had no holidays at all?

busy fingers
In a survey of 50 pop musicians for Beat magazine, 30 said they played guitar, 17 said they played keyboards and 12 said they played neither. How many musicians could play both guitar and keyboards (not at the same time we guess)?

fish supper
On Sunday there were 26 keen anglers fishing at Barnes Water (a large lake in South London). By the end of the day 4 of the anglers had caught no fish; 17 anglers had caught pike – and 6 of these had caught roach as well. How many anglers had caught only roach?
