Writing -  Week 3

Just like when we are in school, our writing is going to follow our adventure! 

 

Our adventure so far

You have found a mysterious dragon egg. You have researched into dragons and predicted what you think your dragon might look like.

You looked closely at your dragon egg and discovered that there is a note! It's a note from the dragon's mother, explaining that she had to leave them there as their home was being destroyed by an evil wizard! She knew she could trust you with her dragon and asked that you take care of them. She will return once their home is safe again. You learnt all about teeth and how to keep your baby dragon's teeth healthy and strong. 

This week... 

You are going to learn about food chains so that you know what to feed your dragon when they come out of their egg! You're also going to create your very own moving mother dragon using levers and mechanisms so that when your baby dragon hatches, it will feel like their real mother is there!

 

Day 1 - Formal or Informal?

I think it would be nice to write a reply to the mother dragon letting her know that we received her letter and that we will happily take care of her baby dragon. Before we write back, it is important that we learn the basic rules of writing a letter! Your task today is to work through the different PowerPoints and learn the differences between formal or informal. You will then create posters that will explain to other people the main differences and the features that you need for a formal or informal letter. 

Day 2 - Starting our Letter

I think you will agree that it will probably be best to write an informal letter back to the baby dragon's mother. Although we might not know her, this situation is quite sensitive and we want her to know that we are taking really good care of her baby! We also have lots of questions that we need to ask! So today let's make a start by setting out letter out and writing our first paragraph. Follow the steps below to start your letter. Remember, you can also look back at the informal letter Powerpoint to help you. 

  1. Write your address in the top right hand corner of your letter
  2. Write the date underneath your address
  3. Write your name of the person who the letter is for below the date on the left hand side. You can use 'Dear' or a more informal greeting, such as 'Hello' or 'Hi'. Add a comma after the person's name. 
  4. Tell the person why you are writing to them. 

 

SPAG - For our first paragraph that explains why you are writing this letter, try and use apostrophes for contraction! We want the mother dragon to be able to read this quickly so that she knows her baby is safe and can then destroy the letter as soon as possible so the evil wizard can't find it!

Day 3 - All about you

We are now going to write our next paragraph in the letter. I thought it would be reassuring for the dragon's mother to know a little about you! So this paragraph is all about you!

Tell her:

  • Your name
  • Age
  • School
  • Your friends
  • Who you live with
  • Any other past experiences with animals e.g. pets you have looked after
  • What knowledge you already have about dragons e.g. films you've watched, books you've read
  • What you've been up to in lockdown
  • What you think the baby dragon will look like when they hatch
  • What you've been learning through the adventure lessons. 

SPAG focus: Today is a simple SPAG task, I'd like you to focus on your spellings. It would also be great if you could try and include spellings from the Year 3/4 spelling list. See how many you can squeeze in there! Check them out in the document below. You could always use them to make a fun game of BINGO!

Day 4 - Asking questions

for our next paragraph, I thought it would be a good idea to take the time to ask the dragon's mother as many questions about how to raise a baby dragon as possible! Such as:

  • What do they eat?
  • How long will it take for the dragon egg to hatch?
  • What games do they like to play?
  • How do I teach them how to fly?

Day 5 - Editing

We just need to sign your letter off and then we can edit! 

Finish off your letter using an appropriate ending e.g. 'Speak soon', followed by your name. 

 

Today you are going to edit the your letter. Just like in our short edit lessons, you are going to look at the checklist below and see if you have included everything that you can! Read through your work and check off the checklist as you go. If you see anything missing, see if you can include it. 

 

Whilst you're reading, you may also notice mistakes or realise that you could add more description. So add it! If you notice you have repeated anything such as adjectives, remove it. If you think you could improve your choice of words, improve it! Take everything you have learnt in our short edit lessons and apply them to your own writing.
