## Day 1

Today I'd like you to have a go at these word problems.

Sue’s office is on the third floor of a large building. Altogether 32 people work on this floor and each person has to use either the stairs or the lift to get there. 23 people regularly use the lift -  and of these 7 also use the stairs from time to time. How many never use the lift?

Bob’s Barber Shop
Bob had 32 customers on Monday. Every customer had a shave, a haircut or both. In fact, 13 altogether had a shave, 26 altogether had a haircut and 7 had both a shave and a haircut. How many customers had a haircut but no shave?

The Shirt Store
The Shirt Store sells shirts, ties, handkerchiefs etc. On Monday the Store had 42 customers. 32 customers bought new shirts; 7 of these also bought ties. 4 customers bought neither a shirt nor a tie. How many customers bought just a tie?

Transport for London
120 people who work for Williams’ Bank in the City of London were asked how they travelled to work. Altogether 82 said they travelled by train and altogether 45 said they travelled by tube. 10 said they didn’t use either the train or the tube. How many used both the train and the tube to get to work?

Today I'd like you to have a go at this maths skills test which combines lots of different areas of maths that we looked at earlier in the year. Use the websites at the top of the page to help you with any revision you may need to do.
