Autumn 1

We have had a busy couple of weeks settling into Reception! There has been lots of time learning, playing and making friends as well as getting used to the classroom rules. Now that we are all familiar with our surroundings, we're ready to get stuck into our learning journey.

Our first P.E lesson in the hall was so exciting! The children did so well at listening to what was being asked of them in a different area of school. They learnt all about spacial awareness.

Ourselves

Today we looked closely at our features and what makes us unique. We talked about being similar and different to our friends.

We know we all have 2 eyes but they can be different colours. We know we have hair but it can be curly or straight, short or long, red, brown or blonde. We know we have skin of all different shades and some people have glasses and some do not. We drew what we look like with our individual, unique features.

Our Key Text

This week we are talking about our friends, how to be a good friend and what makes us similar or different to our friends? We thought about what we looked like and what our friends look like. We then drew a picture of ourselves and our friend.

Week 5 - Key Text 'My Magic Family'

This week we will be using this lovely story as a way to open communications about the way families are similar and different and celebrate diversity! In this celebratory, reassuring rhyming story a little girl with two mummies shares the magic of her family and discovers how magic all her friends’ families are, too. This is a warm, funny read-aloud book.

Using natural art to make portraits.

After talking about our families and how they can consist of lots of different people of different ages, we discussed the changes that happen to our bodies as we grow up. We ordered baby, children and old people talking about wrinkles and grey hair.

Healthy choices

The children have been talking about making healthy choice we discussed foods that we can eat often and good we should eat less often. We discussed that no food is off limits just to be careful we don't eat too much of certain foods like pizza, chocolate and sweets. The children were challenged with finding a healthy food we could use for a dessert. The children came up with some fantastic ideas.

Making chocolate apples

The children decided chocolate apples would be a great idea for a healthy treat as its only a small amount of chocolate but a full healthy apple. The children loved making their apples, especially eating them at snack time.

History!

The children have been comparing photos of old Middleton and new Middleton. They went on a local walk to have a look around our area and then looked at old photos to see how it has changed. The children were fascinated by the black and white!
