Autumn 1 & 2: Wartime Tales

In Science, we have started to learn about different sources of light and what we think is man-made or natural. In our groups, we did an experiment to prove that light travels in a straight line. The children had 4 pieces of card (two of them with holes in) and a torch. They had to line the cards up to see if it worked correctly and they were really amazed how it worked.

In DT, Sycamore have been looking at the different structures and how they are reinforced. We experimented on our own and learnt how to securely join straws together to make different frames that we will use in our final piece. After the experiment, we tested these frames to find out which ones we thought were stable or unstable.

So far in Writing this half term, Sycamore have written a diary entry about how they felt at home with their family when they heard the announcement from Neville Chamberlain about the start of The World War II. All the children used amazing vocabulary to really catch the reader eyes and make you feel how they would have done in 1939.

In DT this half term Sycamore have been working in groups to make their own Anderson shelter based on our adventure. All the children took part in making the shelters, from helping sawing the wood to make the structure to making painting the Anderson shelters. The children all enjoyed making different parts of the Anderson shelters and they worked really well in there groups. They all look amazing!

This half term in Writing, Sycamore have been writing an advert to convince the reader to buy an Anderson Shelter during World War Two. The children have used there knowledge of what they have learnt about the shelters in History and have used amazing vocabulary.

In History today, the children have been looking at pictures of different battles that have happened in previous years such as ‘Battle of Bosworth and Battle of Hastings’. In groups they looked at different pictures of the battles and compared them to the Blitz.

Sycamore spoke about the different technology they used to help Britain win the battle.

In RE, Sycamore have learning about different Jewish festivals. In lesson today the children have learnt about ’Shabbat, Hanukkah and Pesach and what is involved during these celebrations. All the children made their own mind maps about all the things they learnt about during our class discussion.

In History this half term, we have been learning about the Blitz. In our groups we spoke about how we would keep ourselves entertained in the Air Raid shelters compared to now. Sycamore listened to the song ‘We’ll Meet Again’ and discussed about what they thought the song was about and how it represented the war.

Today in History we have been talking about raising spirits and how we would have felt during the Blitz after Princess Elizabeth's and Winston Churchill speech. We looked at the famous figures that came to Leeds and we wrote down what we would say.

In Science today, Sycamore did an experiment about shadows. In there groups they built a model out of Lego and used a white sheet of paper, a ruler and a torch to measure the height of the shadows it formed. The children used there torches at three different distances and the children noticed that the shadows increased in size.

In Art this half term, we are learning about LS Lowry and how he creates his amazing art work. In lesson, Sycamore spoke about how they felt when looking at Lowry’s painting’s and what they saw in his work. We also spoke about the different palettes he uses to create the different moods in a few of his paintings. All the children used water colours to replicate Lowrys colour palette.

In Writing this half term Sycamore wrote a newspaper article about what happened during the Blitz. The children used there creative writing and imagination to capture the devastating aftermath.
