Where in the World?

From KS1 to UKS2, children participate in weekly 'Where in the World?' activities to ensure that Geography is taught weekly throughout the year. This means when Geography is not the main topic, children are still talking and enquiring about the world around them. From September to February half term, children will participate in the weekly 'Where in the World?' challenges, where they are challenged to locate countries around the world, which are linked to their current adventure. Children are presented with a series of clues such as the outline of the country, the capital city and the seas it borders and are encouraged to use atlases, maps and globes to locate the country. The clues are specifically chosen to support revisiting key geographical vocabulary and support children in thinking about where countries are in relation to their continent, oceans and to the UK. Through this, children learn interesting facts about countries around the world and also gain a deeper understanding of the scale of other countries in comparison to the UK. 

From February half term onwards, children will use the resource 'Geoguessr' to try and locate a certain place on Google Maps. This involves receiving a randomly generated location from somewhere in the world and children can move around the location to find more clues to help them work out where they are. Children are challenge to use their inference skills to look for clues about where the location could be such as the types of buildings, flags, roads etc. 

During both 'Where in the World?' and Geoguessr, there is a focus on oracy as children are encouraged to talk about their observations and explain their reasons. They are also encouraged to use their oracy ABCs to agree with other children, build on what someone else has said or challenge someone else's answer.
