Length & Height

In Year One, children compare height and length. They use body parts and other objects to measure items before starting to use a ruler.

Children in Year Two begin measuring items using standard units (cm and m) and use these when also comparing length.

When children reach Year Three, they begin writing lengths in cm and m. Kilometres are also introduced. They continue to compare lengths.

In Year Four, children continue to measure height and length and are now taught how to convert between different units.

Year Five build on their conversion knowledge from Year Four. They also use all their knowledge of measuring height and length to solve problems.

In Year Six, children continue to develop their conversion skills, including converting miles to kilometres. They begin to solve more complicated problems that involve converting.
