Mass & Volume

In Year One, children begin finding volume and capacity and describe them using "half" and "quarter".

Children in Year Two develop their knowledge of capacity by starting to use millilitres and litres as a standard unit of measure.

Children continue to develop their understanding of millilitres and litres in Year Three by using both units at the same time to measure and write capacity.

When they reach Year Four, children not only continue to measure capacity using standard units, they also learn how to convert between these units.

In Year Five, children extend their knowledge of capacity to volume, finding the volume of solid objects. They also learn how to convert between imperial and metric units of capacity.

Finally, in Year Six, children spend time consolidating their knowledge of volume and capacity and can then apply it to more complicated situations, such as finding the volume of compound 3D shapes.
