Swimming
Swimming and water safety is an important part of the National Curriculum; all schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2. In particular, pupils should be taught to:
- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
At Westwood, all children in Year 4 attend weekly swimming lessons at John Charles Centre for Sport. As part of this, they take part in safe-self rescue activities.
Children in all year groups are reminded about water safety, particularly during National Drowning Prevention Week, in assemblies, class discussions and RSHE lessons.
