Where is the 'Dream Believe Achieve'?

At Westwood, our core values (Dream, Believe, Achieve) are at the heart of all we do. Our writing curriculum provides children with the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge needed to be confident, competent writers beyond primary school into further life whilst igniting their imagination and passion for the subject.

Dream
- Children’s imagination is ignited through exciting writing hooks that immerse them in what they are writing.
- Children are driven to become a writing star of the half term, spelling star or handwriting star.
- Children are shown how important writing is to many careers to encourage them to dream of how to pursue this.
- Children have the opportunity to meet real authors and spend time learning how they could too become an author.

Believe
- Children learn to build perseverance and determination when improving different aspects of their writing such as handwriting and spelling.
- Children are taught that it is ok if there are areas of their writing that need improving and they are given many opportunities to do so through the drafting and re-drafting process that we do.
- If children are finding writing challenging, teachers have a range of strategies to draw upon to give support to children so they don’t lose their belief in themselves.
- Children’s writing composition is supported by their work completed in other areas such as handwriting, spelling, grammar and punctuation so they have a wealth of skills and knowledge to put into their writing.

Achieve
- Children have many opportunities to feel success and able to celebrate their writing through celebration assemblies, spelling stars, handwriting stars, star writers of the half term and class incentives for spelling improvements.
- With the opportunity to re-draft their writing and then produce a ‘published’ piece they take pride in their final achievement.
- As producing one final piece of writing can take up to three weeks (for KS2), they see how much effort and hard work went into it, making them proud of their final achievement.
