Phonics

During your child’s time in Reception they will be taught phonics using Read, Write Inc. Read Write Inc. Phonics teaches children to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension. They learn to form each letter, spell correctly, and compose their ideas step-by-step.

Each week your child will be taught 4 or sometimes 5 letter sounds as well as using those sounds to read and write words.

A few parents have had questions regarding high frequency words and sight words.

high frequency words: words which appear often in a book. As your child becomes more confident with reading we teach these words as sight words to speed up reading pace and fluency. E.g in it is and of

Sight words (red words)

these are words which can not be phonetically sounded out. E.g said is pronounced s-e-d we teach this as a sight word and not individual sounds.

Sight words we are learning now:

I, the, no, go, to, into, was and said

Super reading!

We have learnt these 5 sounds this week. Ask your child if they remember any of the sounds. Can they think of a word which starts with the sound (sound not letter e.g: George makes j sound not g so for a j word George would be accepted as j word as this is the sound your child hears.

Sound out (robot talk) see if your child can hear the word you are sounding

d-a-d

s-a-d

m-a-d

Week 4 sounds

Practise the above sounds with your child.

Sound out:

t-i-p

p-i-g

t-i-g

p-a-n

Can they hear the word you are sounding out, if not an adult can sound it and blend it and let your child repeat!

Week 5

This week we have been using our new sounds to really start to understand how words are broken up into sounds.

Weve matched images to initial sounds and used our sounds to label our drawings!

Well done Ash Class, you are all doing very well.

This week we have learnt the new sounds u,b,f and e.

Try using those sounds to read words:
