Where is the Dream, Believe, Achieve?

Dream

  • Children are exposed to a variety of different multi-cultural texts to show them that they can all be represented in books.
  • Children have access to a wide range of authors and genres to develop their own reading preferences.
  • Children are shown how reading is pivotal to many jobs and careers to encourage them to pursue them and see how reading is a key part in everyday life.
  • Children are given the opportunity to meet real life authors and spend time learning what it takes to be an author.

Believe

  • Children learn to persevere in reading lessons through shared reading, partner reading and whole class reading.
  • Children know that it is ok to give answers in reading that may be incorrect as long as they back up their answers with evidence and therefore aren't afraid to share their ideas.
  • Children have pure reading lessons to enable them to truly enjoy the texts they are reading.
  • If children find a strategy challenging teachers are well equipped to adapt their teaching so children keep the belief that they can do it.
  • Using the Big 10 and Expert Tips children are able to answer a range of questions and have a 'bank' in their books to remind them of how to use each strategy.

Achieve

  • Children have chances to feel success in reading through celebration assemblies where reading can be chosen for good work.
  • Through a range of different skills children can feel successful during lessons.
  • With their own reading book, children can take ownership of their own reading.
  • Through author visits and workshops children get the opportunity to create their own books and illustrations.

As a result of a well-structured whole-school progression map, a variety of engaging reading resources in place, a progressive RWI system and many independent reading opportunities, we know our children will leave our school as confident readers, as well as hold a natural interest towards the subject. Our children are confident at talking about books they have read and this is a result of their detailed understanding of many reading skills and how to best comprehend in the subject.
