Spring 1: Rocking All Over the World
Writing
Sycamore had a very exciting first morning back, when Mr Mckittrick came into our classroom saying he had seen something colourful fly pass his window heading towards the playground. All the children from Willow and Sycamore headed down to the playground to investigate what had been seen. The children came out to a “hot air balloon” that had fallen into the playground with a letter inside which was from Barnaby Miles. The children went around the playground to find clues, such as a camera, a compass, a screenshot of BBC1 program, a survival kit, a postcard of New York, binoculars and a world map. The children used to clues and discussed about what they found and how it could be linked to the hot air balloon and Barnaby Miles.
RE
In RE this week, Sycamore have learnt about what happened during Holy Week. The children learnt about Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. We all discussed about what it symbolises' in Christianity.
Science
In Science this half term, Sycamore are learning about electricity. Today, Sycamore started off by discussing what they already knew about electricity. In our groups they did an activity by placing photos of appliances they thought were non-electrical and electrical. After, the children designed a safety poster about the importance of electricity.
Geography
This week in Geography, Sycamore have been learning about the Equator and which countries are located on there. The children have also been learning about the lines of Longitude and Latitude and how they are measured.
Guided Reading
In Guided reading this half term, Sycamore is reading “The Boy in the Dress” by David Walliams. So far in lessons the children have been making connections about why the book is called The Boy in the Dress and what clues are in the front cover and blurb to help them. The children also read a section in the book and drew a picture about what they imagined it would look like and spoke about there emotions.
PE
Today in PE, Sycamore had so much fun doing Parkour. They used a lot of different skills such as jumping, climbing and rolling on different equipment throughout the hall. All the children ended the lesson by doing an obstacle course using all the skills they had used.
Writing
In Writing, Sycamore have been writing a Diary Entry about them finding a hot air balloon in the playground on there first day back to school after the summer holidays. The children found a letter from Barnaby Milles telling them to look after his hot air balloon and he will come to collect it soon. The children used amazing vocabulary and there knowledge of the event to really catch the readers eye.
Music
In Music this half term, we have been listening to styles of Jazz and Sycamore are smashing it. The children are really enjoying learning the different Jazz songs using the glockenspiel and we have some true musicians in the classroom.

Science
In Science, Sycamore have been looking at circuit diagrams and learning about how it works. In there groups the children matched the correct scientific symbols with the pictures and used them to draw three different circuits. Also in science all the children investigated how they can change the voltage in a circuit and how this would effect the brightness of a bulb. Sycamore worked in three groups and used a data logger to read the Lux (brightness of bulb) using to different volts and saw a big difference. At lot of there predictions were spot on.
DT
On Friday, Sycamore had the opportunity to make delicious Mexican Burritos in DT. Before getting stuck into making the amazing food, the children learnt about the background of where the burrito is from and what type of food it is. During the practical lesson, the children learnt different skills like how to cut tomatoes and lettuce correctly and how to open a tin of kidney beans using a tin opener. All the children worked really well and safely together to make the burritos and a few of the children really surprised themselves how much they actually enjoyed them.
Guitars
In Guitars this week, Sycamore have been listening to different pieces of classical music. All the children worked in groups and practiced the harmony, melody and baseline from a popular piece of music called Canon. All the children worked well and did a fantastic job.
Guided Reading
In Guided Reading this week, Sycamore have been reading more chapters on “The Boy in the Dress” and they are really enjoying the book. The children have been predicting about what is going to happen further on in the book and have been working in groups to ask certain questions about what they saw in the pictures.
Geography
This week in Geography, we have been learning about what Physical and Human Characteristics are in different places in the world. The children worked in groups to put pictures in the correct columns to make sure they understood the difference between them. Also in lesson, Sycamore worked in 5 groups and made some fantastic information posters about Greece, Russia, India, Japan and Australia. All the children did a presentation on each country and spoke about some interesting facts they found out.
RE
In RE, Sycamore has been learning and talking about what the Bible says about Jesus’s resurrection. They have been looking at different Gospels and have compared them with each other to see if they are similar in ways or completely different. This week in RE, we have been learning about what Christians believe when it comes to Easter and understanding what the symbol represent.
Spanish
In Spanish this half term, Sycamore have been learning how to say different family members names and learning how to say different features of the face such as the ojos (eyes), oreja (ear) and cabella (hair). The children got to draw an alien and described there unusual features. Somrosa!
DT
On Friday, Sycamore had so much fun in the afternoon making hummus and pitta bread. The children learnt which country this type of food is from and the different process you go through when making pitta bread and hummus. They all had a go to making the hummus and learnt new skills.
RSHE
In RSHE, Sycamore spoke about life changes and what this looks like. We also spoke about friendships and how we can try and make new ones. All the children wrote down their ideas down and we went through them.
Science
Today in Science, Sycamore have been working in groups to try and make a homemade torch. The children used there knowledge of what they have learnt this half term about circuits and worked together to make the torch work correctly. They worked really well in there groups and showed good teamwork.
Writing
In Writing this half term, Sycamore have written a persuasive letter to Mrs Mennell to try and make her change her mind on allowing us to go on a trip of a lifetime around the world in a hot air balloon. The children have used formal and persuasive words to highlight there opinions, hoping that Mrs Mennell will change her mind.
