Key Stage 1

Even though learning a foreign language is only compulsory from Year 3 upwards, we still introduce our Key Stage 1 children to some basic French vocabulary and expressions.

We find that not only do they thoroughly enjoy the French activities, this early introduction ensures that they are well prepared and ready for the French curriculum when they reach Key Stage 2. Further, it enables them to enjoy and participate in the French celebration days we hold across the school.

It also enables our KS1 children to benefit from the cultural understanding that learning a foreign language brings, from the very start of their education.

Over the year the children learn how to say hello and goodbye in French, including answering the Register in French, they learn numbers 1 to 5 and some basic weather expressions.

They learn about how Christmas and Easter are celebrated in France,  and make French Christmas and Easter cards.

Joyeux Noël - Happy Christmas

The children also get the opportunity to taste a variety of French specialities and some have even been brave enough to try the snails we have on our French Day!!!

We hope you have fun practising with your children and if you would like to learn/practice your own French skills please have a look at our 'Useful Websites' section where you'll find lots of activities, stories and songs to share with your children.

Enjoy!
