Writing Progression
At Westwood, progression comes from the increasing difficulty of the genres taught in particular year groups, the features to be taught in each genre in each year group and through the objectives taught within the writing lesson (from the National Curriculum objectives).
Within each key stage, there are set genres that must be delivered throughout the year. These fall under one of four purposes for writing: entertain, inform, persuade and discuss. As they go through the key stages, more genres will be added.
SPAG objectives are then taught within each individual genre appropriate to the class and level of the child.
A progression in writing document is used which shows which features should be taught in each year group for every genre. This ensures progression within each genre can be seen across school.
