Summer 1 & 2: Pompeii Palaver

Guided Reading 

This half term in Guided Reading, Sycamore are reading the fantastic book by Nizrana Farook called “The girl who stole an elephant.” The children have made connections and predicted about what will happen in this by using the front cover and blurb. In groups, the children explored different vocabulary by using an example of text to find their definition and then used a dictionary to find the correct definition. 

Geography 

In Geography, Sycamore having been learning about why do earthquakes occur? The children have learnt about where the plates are located in the world and how they move. This week in Geography, the children used information packs to find out about famous earthquakes and collected important information. 

RE 

In RE, the children have been talking about different values and which ones they find are important to them. As a class we did an activity about what we think would be classed as important or not important such as love, being famous and friendship. 

Spanish

This week in Spanish, the children have become doctors and have had the challenge to find out what is wrong with the patients and translate. They also sang a song about going to the doctors and the different problems.

Guided Reading 

This week in Guided Reading, the children have summarised part of the story where Chaya is trying to figure out how to rescue her best friend from prison. The children have used vital points in the text and there imaginations to show six key points. 

Science

In Science this half term we are learning about the human body and animals. The children have been looking at the circulation system and how it works. They have learnt about the different parts of the heart and how important it is in our body. Today in Science, the children had a fun afternoon learning about how and what is blood, and how it moves around the body. They did an experiment where they had a go at making there own blood using yellow and red food colouring which represented the blood and plasma and used cheerios and marshmallows to represent the red and white blood cells. The children worked really well in their groups and learnt a lot about what is needed for healthy blood. 

 

Art

In Art this half term, Sycamore are learning about Robert Rauschenberg. They have been looking at his art work and trying to identify the type of style he uses and appraising the fantastic collages he has created. This week in art the children had a fun afternoon trying to create mini versions of Robert Rauschenberg work uses different pictures, tissue paper, paint, charcoal and oil pastels. Sycamore have used there imaginations and come up with some great ideas. 

Geography

In Geography this week, Sycamore have been looking at famous earthquakes all around the world. The children worked in seven groups to find out lots of different information about the famous earthquakes (using IPAD’s and key information sheets) to make some fantastic posters.

 

Geography

Sycamore have been learning about the effects of earthquakes and how it would effect people and the land. In there table groups the children discussed about what would be effected (long-term and short-term) and they did a mind map to show this. The children looked at survival kits that are used during these natural disasters and got to choose what they thought was vital to put in there own survival kit if needed.  

 

Science

In Science this week, the children have been learning about what a pulse is and how it can be affected by exercise. All the children learnt how to check their pulses on their necks and wrists. As a class we all headed outside to do an experiment to see if the pulse rate changes if we do any kind of exercise. Sycamore all measured there resting pulse rate for 1 minute and recorded it on a chart. After they all ran around the playground for 5 minutes they all came and sat down and checked their pulse rates every minute for 5 minutes to see how it had changed. 

Art

Sycamore finished their final piece of artwork by Robert Rauschenberg and all the children had fun using the different methods they learnt like ripping, arranging and layering. They used different materials to add texture to their work like tissue paper, oil pastels and paint to show how Robert made his art stand out. All the children worked so well and used their creativity to make some fantastic art. 

Writing

In Writing this half term, Sycamore have finished their writing on the Pompeii Eyewitness Account and they have used some fantastic descriptive writing. All the children have used amazing vocabulary to really capture the readers eyes and make you understand how you would have felt during that time. 

Writing 

Sycamore had a fun afternoon making spaghetti bolognese and garlic dough balls for the Hook and Genre in Writing. The children had to read and follow instructions to make spaghetti bolognese and used chopping stills to cut the vegetables up to add to the mince. They also followed instructions to make dough balls and garlic butter and used other skills to mix the dough and roll the balls. 

Guided Reading

This half term, Sycamore are reading the book ‘The Infinite’ written by Patience Agbabi. This fun packed book is about a Leapling called Elle and how she uses her super powers to save the world before it ceases to exist. All the children have been looking at the front cover and the blurb to help make connections and predict about what they think might happen in the story. 

RE

In RE this half term, Sycamore are learning about how Sikhs express their beliefs. This week in class, the children have been looking at different symbols such as Khanda and Nishan Sahib and explained what they mean. They have also learnt about The Five K’s and how the Sikhs represent commitment in their teachings. 

Spanish

In Spanish this week, the children have been learning how to say some weather phrases and have drawn some pictures to highlight each word. 

Science 

In Science, Sycamore have been learning about inheritance and variation and in there groups worked out what can be inherited and what can be learnt. The children had a fun activity to do using the Mr Men and Little Miss characters to try and match the offspring with the correct one and they also got to design there own. 

Science 

Today in Science, Sycamore have been learning about adaptation and living things and why do they live there. The children worked in groups to match up the pictures of habitats and living things to the correct adaptive trait and explain how they both can survive there. 

Spanish

In Spanish, we have been learning how to say different weather phrases. This week we played a board game, which involved rolling the dice, moving the counter and then saying the relevant weather phrase in Spanish to be able to stay on that space. It got very competitive and Sycamore loved it!
