Summer 1: Rio V's Rainforest
In Art Rowan have been looking at different sculpting techniques to help them with their final piece. In lesson we spoke about different objects we could use based on our topic South America. We all drew our final piece and experimented with different techniques such as carving with soap, modelling with clay and plasticine and assemblage with wire, tissue paper and polystyrene. The children had so much fun trying out all these different techniques and decided on their final material to use.
Rowan had a lovely visit from Pavla a lady from The Leeds Library who came in to speak to us all about the history of The British Library in London. Pavla spoke about an interesting book called “Azzi In Between” who was written by Sarah Garland. The story is about a young refugee called Azzi and her journey to a new life with her family. In this workshop Rowan had to get into groups and act out in freeze frames the story of Azzi and her family. The children had a fun filled afternoon acting out these different stages of the story and really used their body language and impressions to show the emotion of Azzi and her family and what they went through. Pavla was very impressed with Rowan and the way they all behaved and understood what the story was about.
In Rowan this half term we have been reading the fantastic book called Gorilla Dawn by Gill Lewis. It is a story about two children Imara and Bobo who are imprisoned in the rebels camp. They are determined to return a baby gorilla who gets captured by the rebel soldiers back into the wild before it is too late. Rowan have really enjoyed reading and listening to this amazing story and have really captured the story in their work. At the beginning all the children made predictions about what they thought was going to happen by looking at the front cover and blurb. They have made connections through out the book in their writing and explored different vocabulary to identify their answers.
