Progression of Skills

At Westwood, we take inspiration from the Primary Languages Network and lessons are often adapted to cover the four main skills of language acquisition.

Listening
Children learn to carefully listen to spoken Spanish so that they can recognise familiar words, sounds and phrases. They hear the language through songs, games, videos and recordings from native speakers. We focus on 'phonics' too, with lots of lessons featuring a recap of certain sounds which are particularly native to Spanish.

Speaking
Pupils practise saying words and sentences aloud so they can develop accurate pronunciation and confidence when communicating. Lessons are largely focussed on oracy and we use lots of my turn your turn techniques, this helps remove the pressure of language learning, children don't need to feel embarrassed or scared as all children are speaking simultaneously. They take part in short conversations, role-play activities and class speaking tasks.

Reading
Children begin to recognise written Spanish words and phrases. As they progress through Key Stage 2, they read short sentences and texts to help build vocabulary and understanding.

Writing
Pupils learn to write words and simple sentences in Spanish using the vocabulary and sentence structures they have practised. They gradually build their ability to describe people, places and things in Spanish.

By developing these four skills together, children build a strong foundation in Spanish and gain confidence in understanding and using another language. Children are also introduced to the structure of Spanish sentences and learn to accurately use nouns and adjectives.
