Spring 2

Week 1

This week we have been learning all about number nine! We have been exploring how to create the quantity by carefully counting out 9 using 1:1 correspondence and matching this to the correct numeral. We also looked at different quantities closely to decide if they were 9 or were not 9 and looked at how many more than a given number it takes us to get to 9.

Nevaeh accurately counted out 9 on to the 10 frame!

Week 2

This week we have been learning all about number 10! We have been exploring how to represent 10 by carefully counting resources out using 1:1 correspondence and matching them to the correct numeral. We have been looking at representations of numbers and deciding whether they are 10 or not 10 and why we think this and have also looked at how many more than a given number it takes us to get to 10.

Nicholas was able to count a quantity, work out how many more he needed to get to 10 and then find the matching Numicon piece!

Week 3

This week has been all about measuring. We started the week by looking at length. We were practising using the vocabulary long, longer and longest and short, shorter and shortest. We gathered objects and also used playdough to compare and make different lengths.

We then moved on to looking at height. We introduced 3 new words - tall, taller and tallest and continued to use the vocabulary short, shorter and shortest. We used these special words when comparing things from around the classroom, building and comparing towers and also comparing the height of ourselves and the other children in our class. It is really tricky when looking at the height of things to not say 'big' and 'small' but the children have been fantastic at trying to use the correct vocabulary this week!

Week 4

We started off the week by looking at time. We looked at this in lots of different ways - we used timers to feel how long 30 seconds and a minute was, we ordered and sequenced a school day, we talked about the different days we have different activities and ordered the days of the week.

We then moved on to developing our shape knowledge from 2D shapes to 3D shapes. We spoke about how we can see different 2D shapes in 3D shapes, in their faces, but learnt that they have different names. We talked about spheres, cubes, cuboids, cones, prisms, pyramids and cylinders and sorted these shapes into categories. We had some shape hunts around the class room, made 3D shapes outside and also printed with some 3D shapes to find out what 2D shapes we could find in them.

Week 5

This week we have been revising and consolidating our knowledge on repeating patterns. We started off by looking at some easy patterns using an ABAB structure and the children really enjoyed creating these patterns – we have done this using resources, using paint, on the smart board and lots of other ways. We then decided to try trickier pattern structures such as ABCABC and AABAAB etc. We used lots of variations and the children really enjoyed this challenge, well done guys you have worked really hard this week! This week we have been revising and consolidating our knowledge on repeating patterns.
